VHF has an amazing mission! They have chosen to use agriculture and farming as a tool to reduce the veteran suicide rate. They chose agriculture because of it's unique ability to provide for the bigger picture and the never-changing need for people willing to produce food. "Farming offers a host of therapeutic benefits – nutrient dense foods, vitamin D absorption, physical exercise, accomplishments from working with others, immersion in the beauty of nature, and cultivation of life – all of which feed body, mind, and spirit" states the VHF website. In addition to farming, VHF provides training on beekeeping, animal husbandry, sustainable energy, and holistic health. Some of the produce grown by veterans participating in VHF's program is donated to military veterans, specifically those who are elderly or disabled, as a means of a nutrient-rich, fresh, food source. This allows the participants to give back to something bigger and promotes the sense of community amongst all. While the majority of their learning opportunities are conducted at their on-site location, they are striving to create a virtual learning platform as well and already have many of their seminars and classes available to view online!
