Professional Armed Forces Rodeo Association- PAFRA
The PAFRA is a nonprofit veterans organized for active duty, retired service personnel, reservists, guardsmen, and those who have obtained an honorable discharge. The organization celebrates its 20th year of operation in 2020. The organization empowers its members through a value-based, service oriented organization that still stays true to the love of rodeo. Rodeo is such a patriotic sport, and it seems fitting that there would be a rodeo association specific to our veterans! The PAFRA also has contract opportunities they offer for stock contractors, announcers, secretaries, entertainment, bullfighters, and judges. VHF has an amazing mission! They have chosen to use agriculture and farming as a tool to reduce the veteran suicide rate. They chose agriculture because of it's unique ability to provide for the bigger picture and the never-changing need for people willing to produce food. "Farming offers a host of therapeutic benefits – nutrient dense foods, vitamin D absorption, physical exercise, accomplishments from working with others, immersion in the beauty of nature, and cultivation of life – all of which feed body, mind, and spirit" states the VHF website. In addition to farming, VHF provides training on beekeeping, animal husbandry, sustainable energy, and holistic health. Some of the produce grown by veterans participating in VHF's program is donated to military veterans, specifically those who are elderly or disabled, as a means of a nutrient-rich, fresh, food source. This allows the participants to give back to something bigger and promotes the sense of community amongst all. While the majority of their learning opportunities are conducted at their on-site location, they are striving to create a virtual learning platform as well and already have many of their seminars and classes available to view online! Veterans may also be eligible for higher rates within the program as well under the 2018 Farm Bill. This program also includes members of the Coast Guard as well! Some programs exempt Coast Guard as they do not fall under the DoD. Programs through the NRCS are voluntary, opt-in programs that benefit both agricultural producers and the environment through sustainable and responsible ag. NRCS offers support through financial and technical assistance, grants, and easements. The USDA New Farmers program is open to all start-up farmers and ranchers, however, veterans enjoy some additional perks and exemptions. The New Farmers program is broken into three resource areas; employment, education, and entrepreneurship. This is a great resource to find not only information on how to become your own operation, but to find careers in agriculture as well. Many of the listed ag careers are government positions with the USDA. The USDA states that they want to ensure that any veteran looking to return to the farm, or start their own operation has the tools and information to do so successfully.
